The President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, has called for support to back a joint bid from the United States, Canada and Mexico to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He solicited for Nigeria’s supports when he met with Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari at the White House
NIGERIA’S LOYALTY TESTED?
Morocco and indeed Confederations of African football would be watching closely the development from the Nigerian angle. Since the pattern of voting and how associations voted will be public knowledge after the election, it will be good to know where Nigeria Football Federation’s loyalty and allegiance lie. It’s noteworthy that Nigeria Football Federation had some agreement with Morocco that will be of benefit to Nigeria and thus the football boss will surely be leaning towards support for an African bid which will be termed an African world cup.
FIFA SECRETARY GENERAL FIASCO
The drama and the political maneuvering has already started, as Madam Fatma Samba Diouf FIFA’s secretary General is being investigated for what is termed conflict of interest because she bears a similar surname with her country man and one of Morocco’s world cup bid Ambassadors; former African Footballer of the year Elhaj Diouf. It’s common knowledge that Infantino is out to say thank you to the CONCACAF region for support during his FIFA presidential bid. So the allegation from the onset looks like a ruse.
In his words President Trump said “I hope all African countries and countries throughout the world, that we also will be supporting you and that they will likewise support us in our bid, along with Canada and Mexico, for the 2026 World Cup,”
The US President did not mince words, in his request to the President of the Biggest black nation in the world, he was indirectly asking Nigeria to dump a fellow African nation; Morocco who is bidding for the hosting right of the same 2026 FiFA world cup. The challenge here is that does his words pose a threat in other areas to countries that oppose the three North American bid from U.S.A, Canada and Mexico).?
TWITTER BULLYING ?
He also took to his twitter handle to post a tweet that is nothing short of a subtle threat, stating that there would be consequences for countries that vote against USA-MEXICO-CANADA bid for the World Cup 2026.
It seems The President of the United State is saying – one good turn deserves another…. The question this throws up is, has he violated FIFA’s code of ethics, which prohibit government interference in countries’ soccer Federations?
It is public knowledge that Russia, France and Belgium Football Federations have queued behind the Moroccan bid. Morocco’s bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup also has the backing of several countries from the Gulf region and most African countries and this is a great threat to the chance of a joint bid from the USA, Canada and Mexico.
It’s now left to be seen where Nigeria’s vote will eventually swing, will Nigeria vote as a nation trying to win favours from outside the shores of Africa or are we going to stick to the African Solidarity, and vote Morocco?
