FIFA’s congress voted on Wednesday to back the UNITED bid to host the 2026 FIFA world cup. The North American bid beat the rival Morocco proposal, winning 134 votes to 65 for Morocco. So officially the 2026 World Cup will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Some African countries voted against Morocco’s bid.

The 2026 World Cup will have 48 teams playing a total of 80 games – 60 are planned in the US and 10 each in Canada and Mexico. All three hosts should get automatic places in the lineup, and each host a game on opening day.

Morocco was 5th time unlucky, the 2026 bid is Morocco’s fifth bid to host the FIFA World Cup after unsuccessful attempts in 1994, 1998, 2006 and 2010. The Magreb nation lost out to the United States, France, Germany and South Africa respectively.
