First Bank on Sunday finished third at the 2017 FIBA Africa Club Championship for Women in Angola after beating 2016 champions Inter Clube of Angola 70-61 in their third-place match.
The Nigerian champions are finishing third for the second consecutive time at the continental club competition after they won bronze in 2016.
The Elephant Girls beat Kenyan Ports Authority 84-63 in the quarterfinals but lost to Angolan side Primeiro d’Agosto 64-44 in the semifinal.
Inter Clube lost 71-62 to Ferroviario De Maputo of Mozambique in the semifinal after beating Daring Club Motema Pembe of DR Congo 68-38 in the quarterfinal.
Although Inter Clube failed to successfully defend the title they won in 2016, they also failed to get a double over First Bank in the third-place match as the Nigerians took the first two quarters of the game and didn’t allow the Angolans a way back into the game.
The coach Peter Ahmedu side established a lead in the first quarter winning 22-21, which they extended in the second quarter with a 22-10 score. Inter Clube took the third and fourth quarters 15-13 each but it was not enough to deny First Bank the bronze.
Cecilia Okoye led the board for First Bank with 21 points and 11 rebounds while American Dominique Wilson had 17 points and four rebounds. Nkechi Akashili weighed in two points and four assists and Chioma Udeaja had nine points.
