Nigeria stunned USA with a big lead after the opening first quarter of their quarter final match up, it seems the Americans were fast asleep as the Nigerians swarm over them and made them pay, leading even while shooting 8-of-19 from the field. Nigeria won the first quarter 17-9, Evelyn Akhator had 6 points,
The Americans came on strong in the second quarter with aja taking the initiative and rallying her team mates, they won quarter by outscoring the Nigerians 18-6 the half time score stood at 27-23 what a let down by the Nigerians they needed to pick themselves up.

The Americans turned on the heat and dominated the match up and restricted the Nigerians to scoring only 17 points after the half time break, so from 27-23 score at half time , we could only score 17 more points to make it 40 points in total while the Americans scored 43 points in both 3rd and 4th quarter.

Overall team USA completely overcame their slow start and crushed the Nigerians 71-40, to book their spot in the Semi-finals. This win for the defending champions,USA is their 20th straight win and they were just one point short of reaching the 10,000 points mark in the years of participating in the Fiba Womens’ world cup

POSITIVES

Against all the odds we won a match for the first time in our history at the Fiba Women’s world cup and to further cement our place in history we went further to defeat higher ranked teams like Turkey, Argentina and indeed Greece to make it 3 consecutive wins at the competition. If we stay committed to this cause and not lose sight of the progress made we will surely be world beaters in years to come. The grassroots development of the game must start in earnest to capitalise on the awareness the feat of the team has created.

In our quarter-final match up against the mighty USA, we held them to just 9 points in the first quarter, this is the first time ever in their history be it at the World Cup or Olympics games that they won’t get a double digit. Also first time they scored less than 10 points in any quarter since 2006 and their last defeat, against Russia in the Semis.
