Gao Ning has been termed Mr. second place as he came close to winning the Gold at the commonwealth games in India and Glasgow but failed at the final hurdle and went home with the silver. This time the 36 year old was determined to rewrite the history books and so he did by finally winning the GOLD MEDAL in an enthralling matchup with Nigeria’s own ambassador Aruna Quadri.

The no.3 seed, at the final hurdle he beat Nigeria’s Quadri Aruna in a six games contest that enthralled the packed to capacity Oxenford Studios (11-7, 11-8, 5-11, 3-11, 11-9, 11-5), winning the close fifth game after taking a “Time Out” when trailing 4-5 proved vital.Success for Gao Ning who was guided throughout by the very astute, Liu Jiayi, the national coach; he had the tactics organised to perfection.

Aruna was ahead 8-5 in the 5th but he lost his way and Gao won the all important 5th and in the 6th Gao’s momentum continued and he breezed through to victory

Gold for Singapore, silver for Nigeria, it was bronze for India.

Guided as always by Massimo Costantini, Sharath Kamal Achanta, the no.4 seed, beat England’s Sam Walker, the no.8 seed to secure the bronze medal (11-7, 11-9, 9-11, 11-6, 12-10). It was a contest in which the national pride was at stake.
